Course Format

Self-Guided in Canvas (You will be able to access the course content once you have enrolled in the course.)

Instructor-led in Person (You will be able to sign up for an in-person session once you have enrolled in the course.)


Participants will be introduced to the principles of surgical skills including proper instrumentation, suturing, aseptic technique, surgeon and animal subject preparation. Before attending the two-day workshop, participants must review the surgical workshop pre-requisite material. These materials will be available through Canvas upon registration for the course. The workshop takes place over two days and will start with a short quiz and discussion about surgical procedures. Participants will then have a chance to practice suturing, aseptic technique, and surgical preparation. *Students must sign up for both Part I and Part II of the in-person workshop to complete the course*


This session will introduce participants to the use of aquatic species in research. In this course, participants will learn:

  • About surgical instrumentation.
  • About aseptic technique and surgical preparation.
