This 8-10 hour course will introduce participants to common concepts in Intercultural Communication that will help participants to navigate intercultural experiences and gain the most possible from these interactions. The course is made up of 6 modules. Participants will complete the first four modules before participating in an intercultural experience (course, study abroad, extracurrcular, volunteering, etc.). If you are a student, this will be added to your co-curricular record upon completion at the end of the semester in which you completed the course.

Objectives:

  • Introduce 'culture' as a concept to students participating in an intercultural activity
  • Facilitate self-reflection on participants' cultural identity
  • Provide tools to understand the different characteristics and understandings within cultures
  • Examine ways that cultural immersion can lead to transition shock and how to mitigate and manage these experiences
  • Reflect on Intercultural Communication Competencies and how these can be further developed in participants
  • Reflect on an intercultural experience with the content learned throughout the course
